While walking down the street in Lanus, Argentina, two little boys were confronted with a heart-wrenching site: a little dog completely covered in black goop. Upon closer inspection, the boys discovered the dog was dripping with tar. They immediately recognized the dog’s life was in danger unless it received help, quick.

The boys rushed the poor, traumatized pup to Zoonosis Lanus shelter, where volunteers rushed to begin what would be a five-hour long process of cleaning the dog. Vets on call were initially worried about intoxication, since the tar was inside the dog’s ears, mouth, nose, and intestines.

“We bought a lot of things, we watched tutorials on the Internet, and we were trying and checking all the products and their results,” explained volunteer Myriam Ortellado. “Firstly, it was impossible to clean it, and then we started using oil and step by step it worked, but we used five liters of oil.”

They gave the little doggy the name Petro, which means petroleum in Spanish. They report he is getting stronger every day and will soon be sterilized and available for adoption.

Watch the amazing transformation of Petro from totally covered with muck, to a seemingly new dog shiny, happy, healthy and full of life.

When he first entered the animal shelter, Petro could hardly walk because he was so scared and sticky.

It remains a mystery whether Petro fell into the tar by himself, or if he was thrown in

Petro’s true colours were finally revealed after hours of being washed with five liters of oil, the only safe way to remove tar.
