Just like other touristy destinations, Punta Cana can be a hotspot for scams victimizing holiday-goers. The most notorious of these scams involves a seemingly friendly stranger handing you something unremarkable, such as a bottle of water, asking you to watch it for him while he goes on a quick errand. An accomplice of his, posing as a police officer, later arrives, claiming that what you are holding contains drugs for which he demands money to let you leave. Never ever accept anything from anybody you do not know to prevent you from situations like these.

Cases of assaults on female tourists have also been reported in Punta Cana. The best way to avoid becoming a victim is to avoid going to unfamiliar places at night, especially on your own.
If you do find yourself in a bar, you should never, ever, leave your drink alone nor should you accept one from strangers. Always go out with a group and try your best to keep them close by
