The Emergence Of The New World: How The ‘Normal” We Know Of Will Change After Covid-19

BBC

It has been almost three months since the beginning of the worldwide quarantine took effect and it’s significantly clear that life will not return to the previous version of ‘normal’ anytime soon. In fact, there have already been fundamental changes that most countries have experienced which will remain permanent.

When this global pandemic abates, we will be reborn into a new world. Here are some notable changes that the world will have to break with the past from:

Public healthcare for every human being has to be mandatory.

Before the coronavirus crisis came crashing down, universal healthcare was not something everyone had access to. During the crisis, it has become a unified view that free testing to every single person is critical in order to protect the human race. Both rich and poor got affected equally, which obviously showed a good healthcare system needs to serve not only some, but everyone.

Online presence becomes centerstage.

Before the pandemic, physical stores were already struggling in competing with online retail. The quarantine rules forced everybody to do their work, shopping and play online. As the stores most unlikely to sell online started joining the bandwagon, it is highly unlikely any of them would go back to just managing a physical store. In-store physical shopping and commercial real estate will take a very drastic hit in the long term.

Food supply chains are better off being distributed local, than global.

International trade wars and tariff stretched global supply chains nearly to a breaking point.  The pandemic broke those chains eventually. Companies have now learned their lesson to trust all their supply coming from just one country, or even from abroad. Companies are now favouring local suppliers and diversifying their connections, even if it means more expense.

Unemployment is no longer just for the lazy.

When the unemployment rate was at the low of only 3.9%, no one wanted to support unemployment benefits or minimum wage. The general opinion was that the unemployed people were too lazy to support themselves financially. When 3.3 million Americans were forced to apply for unemployment in a span of a week, it became clear that there are global situations that could greatly impact the careers of millions of people, regardless of their college education, impressive skills and abilities. Not providing unemployment benefits for those who were affected would affect the economy for all.

Gaining trust in the world and humanity once again will be a while.

How long will it take when homeowners are comfortable inviting acquaintances or friends into their home? Will people eventually be comfortable enough to enjoy a cruise again? How about the hard-hit countries that have stopped all tourism? Would they be able to enjoy traveling as tourists locally and internationally again? Going back to the old ‘normal’ will probably take a couple of years.

The digital new-age will be the answer to everyone’s problems.

As the self-quarantine becomes the new norm, everyone has shifted to working and studying online. Those that already worked in IT and technology jobs or have these skills can continue on with their lives fairly unaffected during these days. Direct access and the ability to shift to online work is a necessity, while the others that are unable to do this will fall behind economically .

Insurance has gained far more importance for companies and individuals.

In the past, businesses and individuals viewed insurance as a useless expense that reflected pessimistic view. After seeing how this crisis unfolded and all the damage it has created to every possible sector worldwide, corporations that had contingency plans and risk planning are the only ones benefiting. Risk management will become a necessity in the new world, while companies will actively test and develop their contingency plans while buying up insurance in case of another unforeseen pandemic. Instead of insurance being viewed as an unpleasant expense, it will be a wise decision to protect yourselves.

After any crisis period, there comes a huge desire for rebirth and renewal. After world wars come a post-war boom. Citizens of each and every country that have participated in a war are traumatised with death and destruction and when peace comes, a second chance at life with positivism, energy and economy-building comes with it.

There will be a huge demand for products and services, people are eager to get their lives back on track by getting back to their jobs, investing and shopping. Hopefully, this rebirth will be a vital part of the new world that is soon to emerge.
