It has been stressed often, particularly during these times of the pandemic, that washing your hands is essential to help prevent contracting and passing on the coronavirus. A simple task, yet many of us take it for granted. Well, a certain Orangutan named Sandra will put those who forget to wash their hands thoroughly, to shame. If an orangutan can do it, surely you should be able to do it.

Sandra the orangutan was born at Rostock Zoologischer Garten in Germany. But she spent most of her time in Buenos Aires, where she sadly was living alone, with no other orangutans to keep her company. But as luck would have it, a judge in Argentina granted Sandra legal personhood, which entitled her to better living conditions. November of 2019 saw Sandra arrive at the Center for Great Apes, where she currently resides, together with 22 other orangutans. Last January she celebrated her 34th birthday, and was feted a lovely birthday party by her new caretakers.

Recently, a video of Sandra washing her hands went viral, something some people take for granted, even during this dangerous pandemic. And the fascinating thing was, she seemed to be enjoying every bit of it. While it is advised that washing of the hands should take about 20 seconds to thoroughly cleanse them, Sandra is seen meticulously washing (and brushing) her hands for longer than the prescribed 20 seconds. She then proceeded to clean her surroundings, until she decided she was done with her “cleaning” chores for the day. Many who reacted to the video post praised her for showing us and reminding us the importance of thorough washing of the hands.

We may be the most intelligent of the species on earth, but sometimes we need to learn from examples of simple but important stuff from the “lesser” inhabitants of the planet. Seems it’s not all about brains though…think about it.
