The Amazing Hokkaido “Flying Cotton-Ball” Birds

Twitter

You don’t have to be a bird watcher to notice certain birds are cute and amazing. There is one in particular, if ever you visit the island of Hokkaido in Japan. These “smol” birds are just the cutest, they look like flying cotton balls! They are called the Long-Tailed Tit, but their tail is only long in relation to their bodies. They are quite common throughout Europe and Asia, but the Hokkaido version is unique, and surely the cutest.

Hokkaido is the second largest island in Japan and is famous for its wildlife diversity. Some species are unique to the area, which has an abundance of preserved wildlife areas — 6 national parks, and 17 quasi-natural and prefectural parks.

All About Japan

Most Long-Tailed Tits have brown or gray “eyebrows” and more brow in their feathers, but the Hokkaido ones have pure white faces. So these “flying cotton balls” are truly a unique Hokkaido experience. In fact, they are distinct enough to have their own name – the shima-enaga bird, which translates literally to “long-tailed island bird.” They are definitely popular among the Japanese, and you can find lots of treats and stuff themed around these cute birds.

Surely something the Japanese are proud of, and rightly so. So if ever you find yourself in Japan, do visit Hokkaido and experience the “flying cotton balls” for yourself.
