Portugal Bids Goodbye To Fossil Fuel And Runs On 100% Renewable Energy

Portugal, a nation characterized by its sunny, windy, and wavy landscapes, has exemplified its unique suitability for renewable energy by achieving a remarkable feat – powering its entire population of 10 million solely through the forces of nature for an impressive six consecutive days. The journey towards this groundbreaking accomplishment began on Friday, the 27th of October, when Redes Energéticas Nacionais, the largest energy company in Portugal, reported that the prevailing wind and wave conditions were generating the nation’s entire energy supply. What was initially anticipated to last only a day or two turned into an impressive streak that endured for the subsequent five days, defying expectations and even resulting in periods during which Portugal’s grid exported surplus renewable electricity to neighboring Spain.


During this unprecedented period, there were a total of 149 hours of continuous renewable energy generation, with 95 hours witnessing Portugal’s grid actively exporting renewable electricity to Spain. This extended run surpassed the previous record for consecutive days of 100% renewable energy use, showcasing Portugal’s commitment to harnessing and optimizing its natural resources for sustainable power generation.

Contrary to the common perception that solar power reigns supreme in the realm of renewable energy, Portugal’s record-setting period primarily unfolded during inclement weather – characterized by rain and wind.
