90-year-old Dino Impagliazzo is a popularly known chef in Rome. He dices onions as if he were a master chef and creates scrumptious dishes for all his loyal “customers” who cannot even afford to buy a piece of bread.

He, along with other volunteers go to food markets and bakeries asking for contributions from retailers for the RomAmoR (RomeLove) association thrice a week. All these donations help him achieve his dream of feeding the homeless.

Dino’s dream began 15years back when a homeless man came up to him at a train station in Rome begging for change to buy a sandwich.

“I realized that perhaps instead of buying one sandwich, making some sandwiches for him and for the friends who were there would be better, and thus began our adventure,” he said.

Today, volunteers at RomAmoR cook food on the other remaining four days a week to send to different places in the city, mostly located near train stations.

“We try to involve more and more people so that Rome becomes a city where people can love each other, you know? It’s solidarity.” Dino said this while he was making soup in the kitchen.

Every Saturday, the organization sets up tables under a portico right by St. Peter’s Square so they can feed all the homeless that sleep nearby. Conveniently, Pope Francis has also opened medical and bathing facilities for them in the area.

Dino used to work for the social security department in Italy, so he also launched a mission to feed the homeless with some of his fellow pensioners.

Making sandwiches for the needy was quickly upgraded to feeding them hot meals. From cooking for a small number of people at home, Dino and his friends moved to a convent, and now, they are a total of 300 volunteers who have their own fully professional kitchen to use.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella presented Dino with an award recognizing him as a “hero of our times.” Never did he dream that his initial idea 15 years ago would become as successful as it is now and touch so many lives in his country.
