As the conflict in Ukraine surpasses its two-year mark, a heartening tale of resilience emerges amidst the devastation. PETA Germany, in collaboration with the Ukraine-based Animal Rescue Kharkiv (ARK), has orchestrated the rescue of over 15,000 animals impacted by the war.

While headlines often spotlight the plight of zoo animals like lions and Asiatic black bears, countless domesticated animals have also endured the turmoil sometimes narrowly escaping shelling.

ARK’s tireless teams have emerged as beacons of hope, furnishing upwards of 40 tons of sustenance monthly to a diverse array of creatures, including cats, dogs, horses, and donkeys. Additionally, they administer free spay/neuter surgeries to 150 animals each month and diligently maintain sanctuaries for the afflicted animals in Kharkiv.

Through collaborative efforts with partners in Germany, many of these animals find reprieve through international rescue initiatives, granting them second or even third chances at life. PETA, which staunchly supports ARK’s endeavors, regularly shares updates on their lifesaving missions, showcasing poignant tales of rescue operations.

These narratives often depict soldiers and civilians extending compassionate gestures to shelter and care for abandoned animals amidst the chaos of conflict.

PETA understandably takes pride in the commendable work carried out by ARK, an organization they actively support, and consistently shares updates whenever animals are rescued. Numerous narratives and videos depict heartwarming accounts, such as the rescue of a pregnant dog and her eight puppies, showcasing the extraordinary efforts of soldiers and civilians who selflessly provide care and shelter to animals abandoned amidst shelling or other violent upheavals.

While some rescues necessitate daring feats, such as traversing through lines of fire, others involve acts of compassion amidst less overt danger. One memorable instance involved ARK members utilizing an inflatable boat as a makeshift sled to reach a stranded swan on razor-thin ice, its wing stained with blood. This improvised rescue vehicle doubled as a stretcher, providing a precarious lifeline in case the ice gave way beneath their feet.

The majority of rescued animals require urgent medical attention, grappling with shrapnel wounds, fractures, or infections stemming from the ravages of war. ARK’s hospital operates tirelessly, tending to a staggering influx of 100 to 130 animals daily, exemplifying unwavering dedication to mitigating the suffering inflicted by conflict. Among these patients is Alaska, a resilient goat nursing a broken leg, emblematic of the countless casualties left in the wake of warfare.

“Animals don’t wage wars, but they’re victims of them, left to suffer without food, water, or veterinary attention for grievous injuries unless someone who cares comes to their aid,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA urges everyone to consider the animals impacted by conflicts and the heroes putting their own lives at risk to help them.

For those compelled to contribute to this noble cause, avenues for support abound through the PETA Germany Compassion Fund, which channels aid directly to esteemed Ukrainian partners like ARK. Through collective efforts and unwavering solidarity, a glimmer of hope emerges amidst the darkness, affirming the indomitable spirit of compassion in the face of adversity.
