Instead of Real and Live Animals, This Circus Company Makes Use Of Holograms For A Spectacular Cruelty-Free Show

When the first circus was opened in Paris in 1782, its shows always included horses and other animals to perform their trained tricks. People can hardly imagine attending a circus without seeing elephants, monkeys and lions as part of the performance.

Recently, Circus Roncalli, a German circus founded in 1976, has initiated a step forward to once and for all stop animal cruelty by replacing all circus animals with holograms. Their shows, with this innovative change, has probably made it even more spectacular.

Their performances still feature everything you might see in classical circuses such as animal tusks and tails, acrobatics in their tricks and trades, but for the first time ever, these animals are no longer suffering. Roncalli had the bright idea of creating 3D holographic images which are shown in the area with projectors that encompass 32 meters (105 feet) wide and 5 meters (16 feet) deep with an all around visibility of 360 degrees for the entire audience.

The TAG/TRAUM Agency which handles Circus Roncalli, in cooperation with Bluebox, has partnered up with Optoma to achieve this feat. They installed 11 ZU850 laser projections all over the arena for a completely mesmerizing holographic experience.

“We have been using Optoma projectors for 6 years and have consistently had a very positive experience in price, performance, and reliability. We needed a high contrast projector with great colors for the 3D effect and the ZU850’s 2,000,000:1 contrast is perfect for this project,” said Birger Wunderlich from Bluebox.

This bold and innovative decision comes from the worldwide concerns of the public on how animals working in the circus are bred in captivity and live under horrible conditions that are unnatural to them. Animal activists such as PETA have accused circuses and it’s owners of starving, beating and maltreating their animals, while forcing them to perform for large crowds on very tight schedules.

In the UK, a legislation has just been recently passed in the government that would finally ban traveling circuses from incorporating wild animals to their shows starting in 2020.
