Because of the non-stop increase of coronavirus patients in Italy, the whole country has been forced into a standstill. According to https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/, there are over 35,000 confirmed cases and already 3,000 deaths due to the pandemic. The great news though is that over 5,700 people have already recovered from the sickness.

Since the Italians are practicing social distancing to lessen the rapid spread of the virus, a number of businesses are suffering greatly with every minute that passes. There is panic and tension all over the country. Luckily, despite the lockdown, there is a silver lining to all the sacrifices that are being made for the good of the nation.

Venice is one of Italy’s most popular tourists spots, which receives hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. However, since the country has officially been on lockdown these last couple of weeks, the streets and canals are completely deserted. Because of this, there is barely any boat or gondola traffic happening in their waters.

CNN recently reported that the locals have already noticed a big difference in the water and air quality. A spokesperson of the mayor of the city said that:

“The water now looks clearer because there is less traffic on the canals, allowing the sediment to stay at the bottom. It’s because there is less boat traffic that usually brings sediment to the top of the water’s surface.” Apart from this improvement, schools of fish can now be seen in the Venetian canals.

“The air, however, is less polluted since there are less vaporetti and boat traffic than usual because of the restricted movement of residents,” added the spokesperson.

Ever since the lockdown began, the water quality has become so much cleaner and all across the country that even the swans and dolphins have returned to frolic in the waters. Twitter users uploaded photos of the dolphins spotted in the Port of Cagliari and ducks in the fountains of Rome.

Mail Online reported that the European Space Agency (ESA) said that nitrogen dioxide emissions have had a significant decrease in Italy, while the pollution levels have also dropped considerably.

Here is a time-lapse video that shows the noticeable change in environment:

While several photos have been posted on social media showing how the animals returned to the cleaner waters, the users also took note on how its the humans that are responsible for ruining the planet in the first place.
