There is a saying that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Throughout history, the concept of beauty has always changed, especially in different regions of the globe. There is no one standard for beauty, but there may be general guidelines by beauty contests.  This saying was put to the test. Different graphic designers from around the world were asked by a UK based online doctor to alter a single photo via Photoshop to make her more attractive to the citizens in the country they live in. The results were very interesting. It shows cultural differences in the appreciation of beauty, and standards for them by different nationalities.

Widely held perceptions of beauty and perfection can have a deep and lasting cultural impact on both women and men. The goal of this project is to better understand potentially unrealistic standards of beauty and to see how such pressures vary around the world.”

Basically this experiment shows the different perceptions of beauty in different countries. What may be beautiful in one may not be in another country. How this differs from place to place is really fascinating. Check out the original picture and the alterations made for standards in 18 different countries. Some are actually quite surprising, but you be the judge.
