A rare pink dolphin that lives in the Calcasieu river in Louisiana has given birth to her own cute baby calf. People have nicknamed her Pinky and was spotted recently in the river along with her baby dolphin.
It was 12 years ago when this unique pink mammal gained popularity. Captain Erik Rue was the lucky one who first spotted her. They were seen swimming in front of a big boat along the Calcasieu Ship Channel and a video was taken of them, which was then posted on Pinky’s official Facebook page.
The International Union for Conservation (IUCN) said that these animals’ population has been steadily decreasing, that is why they included river dolphins as part of their endangered species list. Apart from these magnificent animals being endangered, according to experts – Pinky is even more unique because of her pink skin color which she acquired from a rare genetic mutation.
The birth of this baby dolphin gives hope that calves will inherit their mother’s genetic mutation, which could possibly increase the effort of a new and rare population.
Captain Rue closely described that the dolphin’s whole body is color pink, and that it has red eyes. Same as its other relatives, its skin is smooth and glossy. Pinky doesn’t get affected by being exposed to sunlight, or anything in the environment – although she prefers to swim below the surface more often than other animals of her kind.
She’s an incredible mammal who is the star of the Calcasieu River because she brings such joy and happiness to the locals and tourists alike.
Bridget Boudreaux was one of them who spotted Pinky and her calf swimming and playing around in the river a while back. Having the experience of seeing this rare creature with her baby was a wonderful and unforgettable experience for her that she even asked the captain to stop the boat so that she can have more time seeing the mother and daughter enjoy each other’s company.
