Anyone that has experienced a hurricane knows how destructive they can be, and one family from Massachusetts was going to undergo a very harrowing ordeal. After a massive hurricane left 250 million homes without power in and around New England, residents were left with no choice but to use their generators.

While most of the time, generators are efficient and easy to use, sometimes accidents do happen. In fact, one couple was faced with unbelievably scary circumstances precisely because of the use of their home generator. Thankfully, instead of panicking, their 9-year old daughter managed to come to their rescue because of her very clear thinking.

Jayline Barbosa Brandao from Brockton, Massachusetts, was with her parents at home during the power outage caused by the massive storm when she heard her father screaming and eventually finding her mother lying unconscious on the ground. Apparently, there was too much carbon monoxide coming from their generator, and it was causing carbon monoxide poisoning.

Not too long afterwards, little Jayline’s father passed out from the odorless gas as it continued to fill their entire home. Amazingly, Jayline wasn’t overcome by the gas and rather than go into a panic, managed to take heroic and life-saving actions instead.

She chose to get her father’s phone to call 911, but before she managed to do that, she noticed that her dad’s iPhone was locked. Amazingly, she knew what she had to do, explaining what she did to a reporter from Boston WFXT-TV, saying, “I unlocked it by using my dad’s face.”

Quickly, she called 911 for help, after which, she called her neighbors as well.

Fortunately, the paramedics arrived and were able to treat her parents right away. Her mom also credited her daughter’s quick-thinking and her actions to their survival.

Notably, generators are supposed to be used in a highly ventilated area since they emit incredibly poisonous gas, just like a combustion engine of a car. If it wasn’t for little Jayline’s heroic actions, things could have turned out very different for this very thankfully family.
