5 Beehives With Thousands Of Bees Survive Being Buried By Volcanic Ash For 50 Days

Bees are always portrayed as the villains, but in reality, they are actually way cooler than most people give them credit for. Yes, they have incredibly painful bee stings, and yes, they can force someone to go into anaphylactic shock, but it’s not their intention to hurt people at all.

Actually, they are a large part of the reason why humans can enjoy their time on Mother Earth. Aside from providing honey, which is rich in healing properties, bees are also the main contributors to plant pollination, which is necessary for the planet’s food security. It’s a good thing that bees have managed to survive millions of years of evolution because without them, life wouldn’t be the same.

Aside from their rich contributions to society, apparently, they have super survival skills. As a matter of fact, they even managed to endure a volcanic eruption and being buried under ground for almost two months.

After the horrible eruptions that occurred on La Palma in the Canary Islands last September, it took rescuers weeks, if not months, to dig through the rubble and sift through the mountains of ash that had fallen everywhere. And to their utter disbelief, beneath the ash was not just one recovered beehive, but five of the six beehives that had been buried underground for 50 days.

Not only had the bees survived being beneath the ground for that long, but they had been producing propolis, which is a resinous material that they created to close up any holes in their hives to stop the infiltration of ash.

While inside, the bees managed to sustain themselves by keeping busy and eating their stored-up winter honey, which thankfully, had not been collected by their beekeepers prior to the eruption.

These bee hives are highly beneficial to the islands precisely for pollination, and during spring they tend to have at least 30,000 to 40,000 bees living inside each one.

As published in the Calgary Herald, the rescuers suffered from a few stings here and there, but it was worth it considering that they had found an astonishing five bees filled with bees that were not only alive, but thriving in their environments.

Although not all hives managed to survive, experts believe that it was probably because of the sixth hive’s proximity to the volcano. If it had been closer like the other five, it would have probably survived since it wouldn’t have been hit by such harmful ash.

Because the bees created propolis, which is a well-known antibiotic that bees actually use to disinfect their hives, this was why they managed to survive being buried in the first place. Bees do the same after being infiltrated by bears or monkeys whose fur tend to leave pesky parasites in their wake as well.

Considering bees have been in existence for millions of years, humans for thousands of generations have benefited from their incredible natural healing properties, consuming propolis as well, which these days, is sold as immune system support supplements and even as natural cold remedies.
