Oklahoma resident Catherine Ritchie has been living peacefully in the same home for the last 58 years which is located in the Tulsa Suburb of Sapulpa.  Three weeks ago, the comfortable lifestyle she had led for most of her adult life changed drastically.

After Ritchie was in her bathroom preparing for bedtime, she turned to go back inside her bedroom and saw that the headboard had caught fire, KTUL reported. Suddenly, that was when her knights in shining armour appeared to rescue her.

Four boys between 14 to 17 years of age where in a neighbouring house when they went outside to go to a convenience store that night, and they noticed that burning smell.

“It smelled kind of like burning rubber, then we heard the house alarm go off.” 16-year-old Dylan Wick, who was one of the four boys told the Tulsa ABC station.

Although Ritchie initially try to put out the fire, she instead called 911 and hit the emergency call button, but now came the real problem of trying to get out of the house safely.

“The smoke was so bad, I couldn’t see to get out of my room,” she said. “I felt along the wall, and I went into the closet instead of the door to get out of the room. I finally did get to the door.”

The four rescuers jumped into action and tried breaking down all the exterior doors to get inside. 14-year-old Nick Byrd successfully managed to enter through the back door and ran inside amidst all the smoke, finding Ritchie lost in the hallway.

“This young boy was right there. He picked me up, and I said, ‘I can walk,’ and Byrd said, ‘We’re getting out of here.’”

“I just kind of heard her. I went to the right of the house and no one was there,” Byrd said. “I went to the left of the house, and I saw her in the hallway, so I just grabbed her and took her to Seth.”

Thanks to her heroes, Ritchie was able to make her way out of the house safely, and the firefighters were able to douse the flames before it turned out for the worse.

A couple of weeks later, the boys returned to the house to reflect on the everything that they experienced. “Ever since that night, my life has just changed…for the better,” said 17-year-old Wyatt Hall as he took a look inside at the burnt mattress.

After everything, Ritchie says she is so grateful that these boys were there at the right place and time. “That’s what I have to think. They were just special, as young as they were.”

One of Ritchie’s daughters wrote a letter to thank the four boys that rescued her mother. You can read it here:
