Because few animals who are cared for by zoos are actually endangered or are in captivity due to conservation purposes, True Activist doesn’t support such establishments. However, the joy a few animals had ‘kicking; a soccer ball around in Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, Arizona, can’t be ignored, which is why the footage is shared below.
In the video, wildlife are active – and sometimes vicious – when chasing a soccer ball around. For obvious reasons, the footage has gone viral on social media.
One of the residents enjoying a little bit of the sport is 5-year-old Jasiri the giraffe. Incredibly, he handles the ball well even though his legs are astonishingly long. In another instance, lion cubs enjoy chasing the ball around, as well.
The video is light-hearted and depicts the best of what life in captivity might offer, but it’s important to remember that rarely are zoos suitable habitats for wild animals. Life in a cage is difficult for any creature and can sometimes contribute to a number of illnesses, such as “zoochosis.” The mental condition is a result of not receiving the required amount of exercise and freedom necessary for optimal health. This makes sense when one considers that elephants walk up to 30 miles each day and that bears are active for up to 18 hours a day. Animals – especially large ones – need space to roam and be themselves – away from humans.
Additionally, it’s important to recognize that most zoos don’t exist to protect and care for animals. Their main purpose is to turn a profit and to provide an educational setting for humans. The best way to learn about animals is to visit them in their natural habitat, such as going on a safari or taking a guided walk through the rainforest.
