Once a year – and always on a Sunday, millions of Americans gather in front of their television screens and watch a football game between two teams with other jeering fans. In addition to beer and soda, ritual fare often includes chips and guacamole, nuts and, of course, chicken wings.

While the American tradition is rarely challenged, as it provides entertainment to those who are sick of politics as well as their own personal dramas, it’s worth pointing out that there are ethical implications to take into consideration when taking part in the big day. According to the American Institute of Food Distribution, Super Bowl Sunday is the second highest event in America for most food consumption — following Thanksgiving. That means while football fans watch their favorite athletes compete, they face off with food, undoubtedly unbuckling their belts by halftime.

In total, fans of the game collectively consume more than one billion chicken wings, 120 million pounds of avocados, and 2.5 million pounds of nuts. The infographic below provides more insight on these statistics.

Animal rights activists are mostly concerned with the fact that 600 million chickens are slaughtered for game day. And, social activists would also like to point out that the gluttonous practice continues, despite the fact that 795 million people go to bed each evening.

While Super Bowl Sunday is undoubtedly fun for those who are interested in a bit of friendly competition and socialization, there are aspects of the tradition that could be improved upon for all to benefit.
