Earlier this year, police in Oveido, Florida pulled over a man for driving without headlights at night. When the police officer looked into the vehicle, they saw a suspicious white dust covering the seats and floorboard.
“I know for a fact (that) it’s drywall because I’m a handyman,” Cashe said. “I said that continuously during the arrest stop.” Police say that field tests of the powder tested positive for cocaine, and K-9 responders also “confirmed” the presence of cocaine, as well as marijuana.
At the time, Cashe was on probation due to charges concerning cocaine and marijuana possession from 2015. WFTV 9 reports, “[Cashe] was put in handcuffs when court records showed he was out past his court-ordered curfew. Hours later, police realized the system was not up to date and Cashe had not violated his curfew.”
Because Cashe had supposedly violated probation, he was denied bond and forced to stay in jail for nearly three months. “I sat there 90 days knowing I was innocent,” Cashe said. “Look at my record. If I get in trouble, I plead to it.”
After Cashe had already spent 90 days wrongfully incarcerated in Seminole County Jail, further lab testing from the vehicle confirmed no drugs were present. Florida Police have not yet clarified why the field test yielded a false positive, or why K-9 responders picked up the wrong scent.
