Ballymore developers have unveiled an exciting and somewhat frightening design for a transparent “sky pool” that will make swimmers feel as if they are floating through the air. To be constructed in London, the pool is the “first of its kind in the world.”

According to Inhabitat, the sky pool will be suspended 10-stories high (approximately 115 ft.) between two apartment buildings in the Embassy Gardens development. 82 feet in length, the pool will be enclosed with 8-inch-thick glass to ensure swimmers have an astonishing view of the streets below. Modeled after an aquarium, the pool is designed to be 16.4 feet wide and nearly 10 feet deep.

Ballymore shares that the pool has been granted planning permission and will be entirely transparent and structure-free, just as its renderings suggest. The design was originally conceptualized by the engineering firm Arup Associates with specialist advice from design engineers Eckersley O’ Callaghan and aquarium designers Reynolds. The sky pool is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.

The pool will allow residents to do more than just swim: it will enable individuals to swim between the two luxury apartment buildings and visit the dual sky decks with bars, spas, orangeries, and dramatic views of the area. A footbridge will also be installed so residents who don’t desire to get wet can transit across the unique overpass.

The structure was developed as part of the HAL-designed 2,000-home Embassy Gardens in the new Nine Elms quarter that is currently under construction. Because flats in the Embassy Gardens cost £602,000 (USD$944,000), not everyone will have the opportunity to swim in the unique pool, unfortunately.

Ballymore’s chairman and CEO, Sean Mulryan, commented:

“My vision for the sky pool stemmed from a desire to push the boundaries in the capability of construction and engineering, I wanted to do something that had never been done before. The experience of the pool will be truly unique, it will feel like floating through the air in central London.”
