Last Tuesday, a flight out of Shanghai was delayed for hours after an 80-year-old woman scattered nine coins into the engine of the plane. 150 passengers were evacuated from the aircraft and the woman was detained by airport police.

The flight was departing from Shanghai Pudong International Airport in China, heading south for Guangzhou, when the elderly woman threw the coins at the engine. Another passenger spotted her and informed the airline.

Beijing Youth Daily reported the woman who threw the coins was traveling with her husband, daughter, and son-in-law. Police ruled the passenger, surnamed Qiu, had not meant to harm anyone and was not aware that the coins could potentially cause the engine to explode mid-flight.

Following a lengthy investigation, authorities reported that eight of the nine coins ended up on the ground, but one coin became lodged inside the engine. Consequently, China Southern Airlines flight CZ380 was delayed for several hours while mechanics rushed to survey the engine.

“A senior passenger threw coins to the plane’s engine and delayed the flight. The passenger involved has been taken away by police,” China Southern Airlines said in a statement on its Weibo account. “In order to make sure the flight is safe, China Southern maintenance has conducted a full exam of the plane’s engine.”

Shanghai police offered a statement on Weibo, ”After investigation the involved passenger surnamed Qiu said she threw the coins to pray for safety. According to Qiu’s neighbour, Qiu believes in Buddhism. The plane is boarding again for takeoff.”
