At every turn of the year, people reinstate their ‘new year, new me’ resolutions with the hopes of having improved lifestyles.  Whether it be turning vegan, enjoying the benefits of yoga, or complete abstinence of alcohol; everyone wishes to improve and start anew.  For those who don’t believe in creating resolutions, hearing your friends come up with these declarations they hope to achieve can be pretty annoying.

Meanwhile, the gym is once again packed with strangers attempting to jumpstart their healthy lifestyles, sporting their unused trainers and newly purchased exercise outfits.  Walking on the treadmill with a newfound intensity, as they try out something new for the first time; or for others, the first after a long time. Undeniably, after a month or two, the gym goes back to its usual schedule, where only the loyal throng of customers remain.

As an exercise newbie, going to the gym can be really intimidating at the start.  Without any idea on how those complicated looking weight and cardio machines work; it definitely takes some time to learn each and every machine’s use.  The last thing you need are those seasoned gym junkies sniggering at your every move whilst you figure out which machine does what.  That bleak welcome alone could make or break the success or failure of your exercise routine.

So when someone turned to Reddit for some gym advice to the newcomers, there were plenty of tips given by seasoned gym goers. One story did stand out from the rest, because it showed the importance of compassion and understanding.  Just remember that you were in their position once upon a time.  What people need in a new and intimidating environment is kindness and support!
