Dog lovers around the world — and animal enthusiasts, in general — are voicing their disgust for a controversial surgery a “veterinarian” has been performing on a street in China. To make the dogs quieter, the man is cutting out the animals’ vocal chords — usually, in noisy and unsanitary conditions.

The viral video (below) shows a stall in in Chengdu where a number of dogs have been brought by their owners to receive the surgery. The first dog is put to sleep with anesthesia. Then, the “veterinary assistant” helps open the animal’s mouth wide. At the same time, the animal doctor in question uses a pair of bloody scissors to snip out the dog’s vocal chords.

The procedure costs between 50 and 100 yuan (approximately $8-$15 USD) and lasts just 5 minutes. No aftercare is recommended for the animals after the invasive procedure is performed, reports the Shanghaiist.

When questioned by the Chengdu Business Daily, the “veterinarian” said he learned how to perform the surgery after opening a pet shop years ago. The reporter later learned that the man is not a licensed veterinarian and, as a result, is not qualified to perform such an operation.

The reporter took care to document the abhorrent condition of the man’s stall. In between operations, the needles and tools were not sanitized. Additionally, blood from the dogs and cotton were scattered all over the ground, underneath the salesman’s feet.

Because Chinese law prohibits veterinary operations from being carried out on the street — due to obvious health and safety implications to the public and the animals, the man has since been ordered to leave the market. A police investigation is also underway.

This recent news has, understandably, sparked outrage. The procedure of “debarking” canines is very controversial, as animal rights activists consider it to be cruel and inhumane. The procedure is done to lower the volume of a dog’s bark. During the operation, tissue surrounding the animal’s vocal chords is reduced. Usually, dogs receive the treatment when their owners are “fed up” with their yapping.

Regardless of one’s opinion on the matter, most would likely agree that if the surgery were to be performed, it should be done in a sanitary environment by a licensed veterinarian.
