A debate raging in Michigan highlights some of the main problems with transgender rights
When a female Planet Fitness gym member complained about a man in the women‘s locker room, her membership was revoked. That’s because the ‘man’ was a transgender woman named Carletta Sklodowska, and under the company’s anti-discrimination rules, she can use any locker room she chooses.
Sklodowska was using the gym in Midland, Michigan as a guest and only entered the changing rooms twice, to briefly hang up her purse and coat and then retrieve them again after her workout. But regular gym-goer Yvette Cormier says she was ‘freaked out’ by Sklodowska’s presence, and made her feelings known to other members.
Planet Fitness defended their decision to terminate Cormier’s membership, releasing a statement to say that ‘the manner in which this member expressed her concerns about the policy exhibited behavior that management at the Midland club deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members.’
They also said: ‘Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members. Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity.’
The embedded WNEM news report looks at public reaction to this story in Michigan, where it is proving to be a very divisive issue. Many people don’t understand the concept of self-reported gender identity, and others believe Planet Fitness’s reaction is a blatant disregard for female gym users’ comfort. The gym has also lost at least a dozen members in the wake of last week’s event, some of whom say Planet Fitness’s transgender policy is putting women’s safety at risk.
