Reported by Paul Armentano, Senior Policy Analyst for National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws(NORML), cannabinoids give hope to those with certain types of cancer. This first surfaced in 1974 but has gained little traction with the mainstream media.
In an article written by the Washington Post on August 18th, 1974:
“[THC] slowed the growth of lung cancers, breast cancers and a virus-induced leukemia in laboratory mice, and prolonged their lives by as much as 36 percent.”
At the time this report was published headlines were plastered with the Nixon/Watergate scandal causing these stories and those like it to the sidelines. In a later report by Journal of the National Cancer Institute submitted 9/3/1975 received very little attention as well. This study identified 3 primary components of cannabis, Delta 9 THC, Delta 8 THC and cannabinol (CBN). These components have shown to impede the growth of specific tumors in the lungs.
“Animals treated for 10 consecutive days with delta-9-THC, beginning the day after tumor implantation, demonstrated a dose-dependent action of retarded tumor growth. Mice treated for 20 consecutive days with delta-8-THC and CBN had reduced primary tumor size.”

Over the years the watchful government has stood by that cannabis has no medicinal value. Currently cannabis considered a schedule 1 controlled substance. Ranked alongside substances such as LSD, heroin and ecstasy. These drugs are considered to have a high potential for abuse, have no accepted medical treatment in the country and no accepted safety level for use under medical supervision. But interesting enough the government holds patents for the medical use of this plant.
