In recent weeks, the propaganda against the Syrian government and its Russian allies has reached new heights as Syrian forces all but reclaimed the embattled city of Aleppo from US-backed “rebel” hands. Numerous reports have circulated which claim that Syrian forces are slaughtering residents in Eastern Aleppo, though they have all been based either on “credible” yet unnamed and unidentified sources or the “rebel” groups themselves which have a vested interest in demonizing the Syrian Army. While these reports have made their rounds throughout the television news circuit in Western countries, little media attention has been paid to the underhanded and often abhorrent tactics of those factions fighting against the Syrian regime, largely at the behest of the Western governments that have funded, armed, and trained them since 2006 for the sole purpose of deposing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

However, recent behavior of the US-funded rebels may bring that trend to an end. Yesterday, a rebel faction called Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, formerly known as al-Nusra Front, attacked five buses on their way to evacuate sick and injured civilians from eastern Aleppo and nearby villages in the northwestern Idlib province. Not only were the buses attacked and the drivers killed, the “moderate” rebels lit the buses aflame, destroying them completely. According to BBC, the attack has apparently halted current efforts to evacuate besieged areas, including those in Eastern Aleppo which have been a recent, major focus of Western media outlets. Yet, this story was largely skipped over by those very outlets, likely due to the US’ funding and arming of the very same rebels that carried out the attack, showing that the suffering of innocent Syrians is only highlighted if it furthers the regime change agenda.

This isn’t the first time al-Nusra or other “moderate” rebels have shown their true colors, despite such events representing a major inconvenience for the narratives of the Western governments who fund them. One US-funded rebel group, Nour al-Din al-Zinki, filmed themselves taunting and then beheading a young boy (~10-12 years) in the back of a truck. In addition, famed journalist Seymour Hersch, in a 2014 article, found through his research that al-Nusra was actually the group responsible for the now-infamous sarin gas attack in Ghoutta, Syria – an attack which the Obama administration had erroneously blamed on the Syrian government. Though much of the fallout from such negative publicity has been avoided by “re-branding” groups like al-Nusra to distance them from their negative reputations. For example, Jabhat Fatah al-Sham was named Jabhat al-Nusra earlier this year, changing only after the US and Qatar pushed them to distance themselves from their parent group, al-Qaeda, to get around international bans on funding them.

Despite the obvious insanity of funding a group like al-Nusra, the US will likely continue to covertly support the group as well as other “rebel” groups who take part in blatant terrorism as they are too important to long-standing US goals in the region. The leader of al-Nusra commented on this in an interview with Al Jazeera, saying “Al-Nusra Front doesn’t have any plans or directives to target the West. We received clear orders not to use Syria as a launching pad to attack the US or Europe in order to not sabotage the true mission against the [Syrian] regime.” In other words, al-Nusra fighters, and likely other rebel groups, know that the “true” mission behind the charade of caring about Syrian civilians is removing Assad from power – at any price.
