Though Donald Trump announced in November that he intended to nominate Tom Price as Secretary of Health and Human Services, Price’s recent confirmation hearing on Wednesday has caused outrage, as people begin to realize the reality of future health laws under the Georgia congressman’s run in Trump’s Cabinet.
Price is staunchly anti-choice and has voted several times to restrict access to abortion in his eleven years as a congressman. Though some were never voted on, he also co-sponsored two bills that would have stated that life begins at conception. The bills contained terrifying language that would have effectively criminalized birth control methods like the pill.
He has also been in support of enacting “conscience clauses” that allow medical practitioners to intervene in the reproductive care that their patient receives, regardless of the woman’s wants and needs. He wanted similar clauses for health insurance providers and hospitals so that they could limit a woman’s access to birth control.
In the frenzy to defund Planned Parenthood, you can guess who was 100% behind that movement: that’s right, Tom Price. His stance has so far earned him a 0% rating with Planned Parenthood, likely stemming from the fact that he believes taxpayers are paying for abortions. Due to the Hyde Amendment in 1976, federal money cannot fund abortions, so Price’s claims are false and his misguided attempts to slander PP’s name is extremely destructive for both men and women in need of reproductive care.
Additionally, Price belongs to a group called Association of American Physicians and Surgeons which seems pretty legitimate, until you find out that they’ve been spreading a lie that states that abortion is linked with breast cancer.
Though he denies ever voting in favor of discrimination against women because of their reproductive choices, there is clear evidence of him voting to disapprove the Reproductive Health Non-Discrimination Amendment Act of 2014.
All-in-all, it doesn’t matter if you’re pro-choice or anti-choice; Price’s actions are always anti-women in general, so while he may be in-line with your anti-abortion stance, he’s also against providing women with birth control, preventing women from being discriminated against, and allowing both men and women sufficient healthcare. Since Price is the nominee for the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the prospect of proper healthcare during Trump’s reign is dwindling.
