Last year, Dubai revealed the renderings of a 3D printed building which was to be the “world’s first fully functional 3D printed building.” Finally complete, the office is something of a marvel. Architects Gensler, Thornton Thomasetti, and Syska Hennessy are responsible for the slick and modern design.

Crown Prince of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who was there for the opening, said:

“We announce today the opening of the first 3D-printed office in the world, after less than one month of launching Dubai 3D printing strategy which showcases a modern model of construction. This is an experience we present to the world on utilizing future technology in people lives.”

The 3D offices are made using the Chinese company’s WinSun tilt-up technology. This means that the floor, walls, and ceilings are all printed on their sides in 2D layer by layer. Then, they are titled vertically and assembled.

According to the press release, the 3D printer is 20-feet high, 120-feet long and 40-feet wide. An automatic robotic arm helped to implement the printing process. Reportedly, the method cut the labor cost by more than 50% compared to conventional buildings of similar size.

It is stated:

“As a fact, one staff was required to monitor the function of the printer, a group of seven people to install the building components on site and a team of 10 electricians and specialists to take care of the mechanical and electrical engineering.”

Treehugger reports that the printer isn’t actually located in Dubai, but China. All parts were shipped. However, it’s the city’s ingenuity which resulted in the world’s first 3D printed office.
