While one doesn’t normally think of legalized substances – such as coffee, beer, and pharmaceutical pills – as drugs, they most certainly are. The only difference between these and “street drugs” are that the former are legalized. And while prohibition might seem like a good idea to dissuade people from utilizing substances which may harm their body, it really only encourages people to source their drugs from questionable sources.

TheWeek points out that the main effect of prohibition is that it causes drug trafficking to go underground. In effect, crime and corruption involved in the market both increase. Furthermore, because the scene is unregulated, a buyer could literally be getting anything as quality control is compromised.

It’s partly because of this that economist Jeffrey Miron says all drugs should be legalized. His first argument is that drugs are a part of society, therefore, need to be regulated to help an addicted populace source substances which are safer; if addicts are monitored, they might also receive the help they need to get clean. His second point is that in mediative doses, drugs can actually enhance one’s learning capability and sense of well-being. Miron believes that if all drugs were legalized, society’s well-being would greatly increase.

It’s a controversial subject, but it’s worth discussing. Watch the video below to learn more:
