This Charity Turns Parking Lots Into Secured Shelters For The Homeless At Night, And That’s Not The Only Thing They Help With

Homelessness has always been a major problem in this world. Many people that live on the streets are there because they most likely lost their job, or couldn’t acquire a job because of an illness. When people find themselves ill, they wont be able to find a job, and without a job, they wont be able to pay for their hospital bills – and therein goes the never-ending loop that leads to homelessness.

Without having a place to call home, these people end up living in the streets and sleeping on newspapers or cardboard boxes. They also go through other people’s trash for food and clothing.

Finally, a charity decided to help these people.

Seeing these horrible conditions that the homeless have to deal with day in and day out, an Australian charity called Beddown started this amazing idea of creating shelters where places are vacant at night – like parking lots. The organization asked car park operators located in Brisbane called Secure Parking if they could launch a two-week trial in one of their car parks.

The charity then created a safe environment for the homeless where they could get a goodnight’s rest. Normal McGillivray, Beddown’s founder came up with the idea when he found himself inside an empty parking lot at night. After planning it carefully, his idea finally became a reality.

The goal of this charity is to create shelters for the homeless at night out of common places that are only being used during the day. These places will provide a place to stay during the harsh nights, as well as security for those that feel vulnerable.

Many homeless people have sleep deprivation from sleeping in such insecure locations which leads them to gaining more problems like depression, hypertension and alcohol or drug use. They are also constantly on defense mode from fear of being attacked or robbed, while sleeping.

Apart from having a comfortable bed to spend the night in, the charity provides other services such as doctors, dentists and hairdressers. They also gave them new clothing and a place to clean themselves.

The people behind Beddown wrote this on their Instagram page:

“We will look to get as close as we can to a proper comfortable bed to provide the homeless with a great night’s sleep is our ultimate goal. Sleep deprivation is a massive issue for our homeless, so being in a place that offers shelter and is safe, secure and comfortable we believe will have a big impact on those who use Beddown.”

Take a look at some heartwarming comments of some people that have stayed the night in this shelter:

“After spending the week here, having a good sleep at night and a routine, it reminded me of life and I booked myself into Rehab for 6 months.”

“Being able to sleep all night and away from drugs, I’m clearer in the day and have not used drugs for 8 days.”

“It’s the first time I have had a dream in years.”

“I don’t have to watch my back here.”
