At Freeport Bakery in California, the staff never question why customers want the cakes that they do. They just create them – masterfully, we might add – and often celebrate the endeavor by posting a photo or two on social media.

Recently, however, employees at the bakery were taken aback when a photo of a cake they posted on Facebook received an onslaught of homophobic abuse. Metro.co.uk reports that people saw the cake featuring a Ken doll wearing a dress as a political statement, therefore, did not refrain from posting hateful comments.

Ken's looking good.

One individual wrote:

“I will never call you for a cake ever, again, and I am throwing your cards to the garbage.”

Another proclaimed:

“You can dress up a plastic doll but sorry to burst your bubble. A person’s DNA determines their sex.”

When The Huffington Post interviewed the owner of the bakery, Marlene Goetzeler, she said she was shocked by the amount of hate the post received. Said Goetzeler:

“I don’t ask people why they’re buying a cake. I don’t say, ‘Are you gay? Are you transgender?’ It’s not something that comes up.”

Reportedly, this is the first time the bakery posted a picture of a same-sex marriage cake, even though they’ve created them for years. To promote positivity, the establishment decided to delete all vile comments on the post.

And, now that news of the backlash has gone viral, Freeport Bakery is receiving more support than ever. Most importantly, the establishment refuses to change its ways to satiate citizens who still aren’t on board with same-sex marriage.

Thank you all so much for the support with Ken. "The best thing to hold onto in life is each other."Audrey Hepburn

“We’re in the business of spreading joy ― that’s what we do. We make cakes that people love, and that’s what we’ll continue to do,” says Goetzeler.
