Because Steve Greig has a soft spot for elderly animals in need of a home, he’s dedicated his life to welcoming them into his home during their golden years. Currently, he has 10 dogs, a pig, two ducks, pigeons, and a few chickens, all of which were rescued.
Greig took to Instagram to explain why he decided to start adopting senior animals. When he reached 500,000 followers, many of which were confused by the account’s name (@wolfgang2242) because he didn’t feature a dog named Wolfgang, he explained that he used to and that Wolfgang is his inspiration for adopting older dogs.
“Wolfgang died too soon. Logistically he should have had a few great years left. It only felt right to give those years to other dogs in need, other dogs with a few great years left that might be denied because of very few prospects.”
His passion for animals began as a kid, and he was lucky enough to have parents that let him bring in as many animals as he could care for. While this is the dream many kids have growing up, caring for animals can be hard, but Greig has always spoiled and loved his pets with his whole heart.
One of Greig’s more famous family members was actually featured on Humans of New York, likely because the owner of the account, Brandon Stanton, is a huge supporter of rescuing senior dogs. His wife even runs an account to help them find homes. Steve said this about Engelbert, his tiny chihuahua:
“His back legs didn’t work. His old owners kept him outside, so his ears were completely frostbitten. And he only had three teeth. So I thought if I didn’t get him, nobody else would.”
As for why he has so many and how he can manage them all, Greig says that his perfect number of dogs is 7, but that 10 is his new perfect number. When he goes on any trips, he takes some of the dogs with him and the ones he leaves at home are taken care of by his roommate and sometimes his maid.
He says that since all of his animals are elderly, they get along great as they’ve calmed down throughout the years. He told The Chive,
“You kind of know what you want out of life once you hit a certain age. These dogs know who they are, and it’s easy to develop a relationship with a person or pet who knows who they are.”
Greig has plenty of senior babies to keep him occupied for now, but in the future, he plans to continue adopting animals who desperately need a home.
