This Activist Is Raising 200 Dogs After Saving Them From South Korean Slaughterhouses

Jung Myoung Sook uses her own money to buy dogs about to be slaughtered for food and spends her days caring for the rescued pups.

61-year-old Jung Myoung Sook may not be rich financially, but she’s the proud owner of a heart of gold. For the past twenty-six years, the activist and animal lover has been rescuing dogs intended to be slaughtered and sold to restaurants in South Korea. She’s also been  offering sanctuary to strays on the street.

So far, 200 pups have been rescued, and Jung takes care of them all.

Some of the dogs she cares for were strays, but a good number were rescued from becoming somebody’s dinner.

Sook told the Associated Press:

“My babies aren’t hungry. They can play and live freely here. Some people talk about me, saying, ‘Why is that beggar-like middle-aged woman smiling all the time, but I just focus on feeding my babies. I’m happy and healthy.’”

Now and again, folks interested in her philanthropy will get involved. However, due to neighbors’ complaints about noise, she has had to move seven times, reports ABC News.

In South Korea, it is common for dogs to be slaughtered for food. But thanks to Sook, peoples’ attitudes about eating ‘man’s best friend’ are beginning to change.

Her kind heart has saved hundreds of dogs and inspired countless activists around the world.
