You’ll want to start a Hobbit village or an off-grid community with these adorable, energy-efficient smartdome homes.
The Slovenian firm Smartdome Constructions has a vision in which prefabricated dodecahedron dome homes can be set up anywhere and offer a multitude of uses. Created with the principles of “bionic construction” in mind, the quaint domes are designed to sit lightly on the land and mold effortlessly into the environment.
The domes are constructed from welded galvanized steel and moisture-resistant plywood. In effect, they are easily expandable. Four types of domes are presently offered by the company: the skydome for elevated applications, the aquadome for water landscapes, the treedome that incorporates vegetation, and the snow dome for cold, winter-type environments.
Buyers have the option to choose between transparent modules with 3D thermoformed polycarbonate or full non-transparent modfules that are filled with 150-millimeter-thick insulation from mineral wool. The energy consumption on the domes is quite low due to the insulating materials. Thanks to galvanized steel stilts, the homes can be placed on degraded areas, such as hillsides and swampy marshland.
According to the website, the company has an ambitious goal of becoming the world’s “leading producer of thematic villages.” The firm writes:
“Our aim is to develop new method of living in the country, combining technical efficiency with careful treatment of resources and nature alike.”
Just imagine: these homes can be set up almost anywhere to create a ski village in Colorado or a Hobbit village in the countryside.
