With Daan Roosegaarde’s newest creation, an inspired environmentalist can scrub the air of smog while they cycle
Thanks to innovator Daan Roosegaarde, one is now able to clean the air while they cycle through polluted cities such as Beijing, China, or Los Angeles, California. The creator of the Smog Free Tower has been touring China for his Smog Free Project and recently debuted his newest idea: bicycles that absorb dirty air, clean it, and pour it back out as fresh air.
Inhabitat reports that because cities such as Beijing are incredibly polluted, few people few inclined to cycle to work or their afternoon classes. With Roosegaarde?s newest creation, however, an inspired environmentalist can scrub the air of smog while they cycle – preferably with a mask until air pollution rates decrease.
Said Roosegaarde in a statement,
?Beijing used to be an iconic bicycle city. We want to bring back the bicycle as a cultural icon of China and as the next step towards smog-free cities.?
The Smog Free Bicycle was envisioned in a Studio Roosegaarde-hosted workshop held at the contemporary art museum M Woods in Beijing. The event featured Professor Yang of Tsinghua University and artist Matt Hope. Reportedly, both collaborated on an idea for air-filtering bike approximately four years ago. Now, the bicycle has been realized.
Studio Roosegaarde shares that the new air-scrubbing bicycle is ?currently in the first stage and is intended to become a medium for smog-free cities, generating clean air by pedaling, and creating impact on the larger urban scale.?
Because bike sharing programs are increasing in popularity in China (Mobike, for instance, has over one million shareable bicycles in Beijing), the cycling solution could prove incredibly valuable.
