Rape is a serious issue all around the world. In Ethiopia, for example, approximately 60% of all women have been sexually assaulted. In India, the prevalence of rape is heavily increasing. Though the United States is a first-world nation, approximately 1 in 5 (1 in 4 attending college) women will be raped. And, as WondersList points out, the statistics go on and on…

Though the plight for women’s rights has gained serious traction in recent years, there is still a long way to go before men and women are truly valued as equals in all societies.

Even in developed nations, it’s not uncommon for women who have been assaulted to be tossed excuses in an attempt to justify a perpetrator’s actions. Like TrueActivist recently reported, it’s far too common for a woman’s (or man’s) experience to be diminished with phrases like “You shouldn’t have gotten drunk,” or “You shouldn’t have been wearing ____.”

Obviously, rape is never justifiable. However, the best tactic to reduce the prevalence of violence against women in all nations might be education. If people are informed of what proper, true consent is, a hefty percentage of rapes might never occur at all.

The following comic, created by Alli Kirkham and shared by Everyday Feminism, depicts 7 scenarios in which the concept of consent is illustrated. There should be no confusion after this.
