"There’s no falsehood – it’s not a scene, it’s their everyday life, our life, or rather mine," the photographer wrote.
Recently, True Activist offered an inside look at one of Bangladeshi’s legal brothels — a photo series that continues to resound and shock readers to this day. Now, we’re sharing a compilation of photos captured by Ukrainian artist Sergey Melnitchenko who spent months working as an artist in one of China’s underground nightclubs.
When Melnitchenko moved to Hong Kong in 2015, he started off as a model and a dancer. As his work took him underground, however, he decided to take up photography and document a world many don’t know exist.
“Transvestites, girls bathing in tubs of beer, drunk actors and even more drunk visitors. All of this [is the] club, the club where I’m working,” Sergey writes in the introduction to his photo series entitled Behind the Scenes. According to DeMilked, he spent four months working in an unnamed Chinese underground club where he documented the happenings.
“[It] is more like a huge bar with a stage, because no one of the visitors is dancing here,” explains Sergey, who’s photo series is all about “the invisible side of the club, the atmosphere,” and the look into the backstage, where “there is more burlesque than on the stage.” He added: “The concentration of sexual fluids is more powerful than oxygen. There’s no falsehood – it’s not a scene, it’s their everyday life, our life, or rather mine.”
Following is a very real, NSFW series that offers a glimpse of China’s secret underground club life:
