Robert Frederick Smith is an American businessman, investor, and philanthropist. A former chemical engineer and a Goldman Sachs executive, he is the founder and chairman of Vista Equity Partners, a private equity and venture capital company with over $46 billion in assets. He is the wealthiest African-American, beating out Oprah Winfrey and David Steward since 2018. He is the board chairman of Carnegie Hall, the first African-America to hold the position. He is also the founding director and president of the Fund II Foundation, which has invested in organizations such as Cornell, Global Wildlife Conservation, and UNCF among others.
