Why Rich People Will Never Stop Flying In Private Jets (And Why It’s Kind Of Your Fault)

Conde Nast Traveler

If you’ve read the news recently, you know what happened to Chinese Eastern Airlines Flight MU5735.

Sadly, 132 poor souls lost their lives when the airplane they were flying in crashed in Guangxi, China.

Instead of reporting on the story before moving on to something else, most newspapers will publish multiple articles about the disaster, and some will post dozens. They want you to know every little detail about what those victims went through, even during their last seconds on earth. You’ll be tempted to read everything thanks to the captivating headlines:

“No survivors in China Eastern Boeing 737 crash carrying 132 people”

Or for those who enjoy something a little juicier:

“The pilot of doomed Chinese flight ‘may have regained consciousness and tried to save the plane’ before the Boeing 737-800 slammed into a mountainside killing all 132 on board, expert says, as desperate families continue to wait for news”

I guess someone really wants you to know the pilot was terrified before he died, but they have your best interests at heart. National newspapers are hardly going to try making you depressed on purpose because that kind of content earns more ad revenue, right?

Private Jets Are Safer Than Commercial Airlines

Every time you turn on the news, it feels like another one of your favorite childhood celebrities is dead. You also have all those soldiers and civilians dying in Ukraine, plus we’ve spent the last few years being force-fed a COVID-19 daily death count. Everyone is terrified of dying, which doesn’t look like it will change if we keep acting the same way.

Now, look at the safety of private jets vs commercial airlines. It’s much safer to fly in a Novajet private jet, so why would someone worth millions of dollars climb onto a Delta or British Airways flight? I know everyone likes to talk about how private jets are harming the environment, but does the average millionaire care about climate change or staying alive?

If you look into why private jets are safer, you see things like:

  1. Jets have more flexibility when the weather is bad
  2. Jets have less disruptive passengers on board
  3. Jets can land at more airports than larger aircrafts
  4. Jets need to make fewer stops (no layovers)
  5. Jet charter companies can pay aircrew/engineers more

Look at all those advantages private jets have over commercial airlines. Do you notice anything that stands out? Jets aren’t necessarily safer than large airplanes because of their size. Commercial airlines could be just as safe if passengers were prepared to pay more for tickets.

If flights were more expensive, fewer airplanes would take off each day. It would mean the take-off time for those flying could be more flexible. Expensive tickets would possibly mean fewer passengers on board if you look at how much everyone is struggling right now.

If airline companies had extra money to spend thanks to higher costs, they could increase the runway lengths at smaller airports. More planes could travel to more airports without losing money, plus airline employees could be paid a higher salary.

Are You The Reason Rich People Use Private Jets

I think you’re partly responsible for private jets making climate change worse, but you’ll argue it’s not you who needs to change. Why would rich people fly on commercial airliners if there are more risks involved? Maybe once you agree to pay more for tickets, we’ll have more luck saving the planet.
