Tesla vehicles are known for two things: being 100% electric and offering supreme luxury. Their past cars, which were the Tesla Roadster, a sports car, and the Model S, a luxury liftback, pushed $100,000 even with the tax incentives of purchasing an all-electric car. On Thursday the company released specifics for their new Model 3, which is not only still all-electric and luxury, but is now offered at an affordable price that will help bring electric vehicles to the masses. Because of it’s affordable price, Tesla pre-sold an astonishing 125,000 vehicles on their first day.

Ten years ago, Tesla CEO Elon Musk outlined his plans for Tesla in a blog post:

  • Build sports car – The Tesla Roadster
  • Use that money to build an affordable car – The Model S
  • Use that money to build an even more affordable car – The Model 3

When he announced the Model 3 on Thursday evening, the first day of the pre-sale, Musk even thanked Model S and Roadster owners for helping the fund this new, long-awaited model and ultimately making the world a better place with an affordable zero-emissions car.

Model 3’s low starting price is $35,000, which is more than half of the price of the previous two models. Plus, it has its own unique features that customers are loving.

Pre-orders began on Thursday, but the car isn’t set to begin delivering until late 2017. Customers interested in ordering the car only needed to provide their full name, email address, phone number and mere $1,000 deposit as an initial down-payment.

The car is guaranteed to travel 215 miles with one charge, but Tesla is hoping to increase the range even more by the time the final model is made. Tesla claims that when Model 3 is released,  7,200 Supercharger stations will be available, which is double the available Superchargers available now. The base model will go 0-60 mph in six seconds, but there will be versions available that go even faster. Customers can also choose between a rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, just like the Model S.

Since the Tesla is a car with zero-emissions, it’s important that this vehicle, and others like it, be made available to a wider-range of people by offering the models in lower prices, like the Model 3. As the climate is rapidly changing because of human intervention, the more humans there are that own cars like these that can cut down on their annual emissions, the better.
