A French Company Launches First Pollution-Free Ferry That Set Sail In France

Euro News

A French company named La Méridionale recently launched their brand new ferry boat ‘Piana,’ which happens to be an emissions free vessel that has service around the French coast. Having been a long-time dream due to being under scrutiny for their major carbon footprint, the boating industry has finally made their vision come true.

Using filters that have the ability to capture 99.9% of Sulphur oxide fine particulates, the vessel manages to keep both its passengers and the Côte d’Azur cleaner, fresher, and bluer than ever.

Tourists have long since enjoyed using the ferry or going on a cruise to see the Mediterranean Islands. One such company, Caremar, may take you from Naples to Capri. But on your voyage, you may have had the unfortunate chance to smell the dark, sulphur oxide induced smoke that comes from the engine of the vessel you happen to be on.

This type of pollution heavily contributes to the sea through the dropping of these fine particles into the otherwise pristine blue waters. When the La Piana was designed, it was made by La Méridionale to have built-in filters that were designed based on biomass power plants or ground-based waste incinerators.

As Sulphur oxides are emitted from the motor of the vessel, they are sent to a chamber of sodium bicarbonate which has the ability to destroy the particulates. After which, the chamber is emptied and sent through a filter that captures them. When the vessel is docked, a hazmat truck arrives to take the polluting material away.

According to the technical director of La Méridionale, Christophe Seguinot, he said, “The challenge for us was to make it suitable for the maritime sector. This involved making the device smaller and lighter, so it could be installed on board a ferry while leaving enough space for travelers.”

The La Piana has trips from Ajaccio and Propriano on the island of Corsica, as well as Tangier in Morocco.

The ferry leaves from Marseilles, which is often gets tons of air pollution that comes from the cruise ships. Marseilles has become one of the busiest and most frequented ports for most European cruise ships, more so now that Venice has banned the ships from entering its canal.

Meanwhile, there is a petition that was signed by 50,000 citizens hoping to ban cruise ships from entering the New Port, but it would seem that there may just be an exception for the new La Piana.
