One of the biggest killers in present human society is type 2 diabetes. Due to people eating processed food or high sugar stuff for convenience, or because it tastes better – diabetes is growing even stronger.

Fortunately, unlike the other killer cancer, type 2 diabetes is slow and easier controlled. What it does is malfunction certain body mechanisms. Having a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle doesn’t help either and is a major cause to the rise of diabetes. In the U.S. alone, 10% of the population is inflicted with a kind of diabetes.

What exactly is type 2 diabetes? Our bodies require daily energy and we get it from sugar. This is the biggest reason for the sugar craving. However, in some case, there is a problem with the production of insulin in the body. Insulin is what helps the breakdown and processing of sugar in the body in order to convert it to usable energy. Therefore, when there are insulin problems, the sugar level found in the blood will rise.

If this disease is left unchecked, it can result in serious problems, even affecting different organs.

Type 2 diabetes, can be easily managed if it is detected at an early stage. Checking your sugar on a regular basis can be a great way to detect it, as well as bring a positive change to your lifestyle. A common household contraption to check blood sugar levels is the finger prick device.

MIT has also come out with something even more stylish. The researchers in this university are developing a color-changing tattoo which will act as a biomarker in order to detect any changes in the person’s blood sugar level. It is called the DermalAbyss project where common tattoo inks being used is replaced by four biosensors that will detect any change in body fluids, and then change color. The tattoo ink will change from purple to pink which marks the different pH levels. There is also a glucose sensor that changes from blue to brown to record changes in the blood glucose level. The two other biosensors will be to detect sodium and the second pH levels that changes under high-intensity UV lights.

Because people that have type 2 diabetes need to regularly check their blood glucose levels, having a color-changing tattoo could be the answer to their problem. They would only have to invest in this tattoo once, without having the need to buy strips or any other devices over and over.

The ink is being tested on pigskin for its efficacy. While testing on human beings have not yet begun, it will happen soon enough.
