Matthew Hofmann is the proud owner of a super-cool 1973 Airstream camper in Santa Barbara, California. He bought it for $3000 and lives in it permanently on a trailer park. Hofmann is a big fan of the brand and points out the many benefits of living in a tiny home. “It adapts a whole new lifestyle and mentality,” he says. “You don’t need so many things, and when I buy things I don’t think: ‘Can I afford it?’, I think: ‘Can I store it?’ It’s the freedom from stuff.” Airstream is, as Hofmann points out, an American icon. “It’s an 80 year-old company that has stood the test of time,” he says passionately. Hofmann owns five; four of which he rents out.
Hofmann’s Airstream, which attached to city utilities, measures 31ft long and has an interior of 125 square feet, but it’s surprisingly spacious. The awning provides an outdoor entertaining área and inside there are three rooms. Hofmann’s bathroom is particularly impressive, featuring a full sized bath and shower. “I like spaces that are white, airy, and open,” Hofmann says. He has blended a modern twist with some of the Airstream’s original features to create an effective and stylish design for his home. A skylight and window in the bedroom give light, opening up the space and making it look bright and fresh.
