As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the coastline, a family leisurely wandered along the weathered shores of East Sussex, England. The tranquil stroll took an unexpected turn when Vicky Ballinger and her two children stumbled upon a remarkable find: eight colossal dinosaur footprints etched into the exposed rock. The sheer size and distinctiveness of these ancient imprints left them awestruck.
The beach, known for its geological treasures, had been transformed by the relentless forces of nature. High tides and relentless rains had gradually eroded the sand, revealing the hidden secrets beneath. This serendipitous unveiling granted the Ballinger family a glimpse into the distant past, where mighty dinosaurs once roamed these shores.
Located between Bexhill-on-Sea and Fairlight, this stretch of coastline has garnered renown for its abundance of dinosaur track casts and prints. Each discovery serves as a poignant reminder of the Earth’s rich history and the awe-inspiring creatures that once inhabited it.
“I grew up in Bexhill and I’ve never seen these ones before,” Vicky said.
“I believe they are iguanodon footprints. They’re not T-rex tracks (because) they weren’t in England.”
Vicky visited the Bexhill Museum with her discovery, and they are continuing their investigation this week. Additionally, she has shared her video on YouTube (linked below).
“The kids loved that they could see the track of a dinosaur and walk where it walked. It was very exciting.”
In the year 2018, a remarkable discovery unfolded along the cliffs stretching from Hastings to Fairlight, revealing over 85 footprints belonging to various species from the Cretaceous period. These footprints, adorned with intricate details of skin and scales, offered a glimpse into the ancient ecosystem that thrived in the region millions of years ago. Among these imprints, researchers identified traces left by at least seven distinct species, enriching our understanding of the biodiversity during that era.
In addition to the footprints, another extraordinary find emerged on Bexhill beach—a remarkably preserved dinosaur brain, colloquially termed as ‘pickled’. This remarkable specimen, confirmed to be from the Cretaceous period, adds a unique dimension to our knowledge of prehistoric life, providing insights into the anatomy and preservation processes of ancient organisms.
The Bexhill site itself holds a treasure trove of fossils dating back approximately 140 million years. These remnants offer a window into the past, showcasing the diverse array of dinosaurs that once roamed the lush freshwater environments of the Cretaceous era. Through meticulous excavation and analysis, scientists continue to unravel the mysteries concealed within these ancient remnants, piecing together the puzzle of Earth’s distant past.

Over the course of time, scientists have made significant discoveries of fossils belonging to a diverse array of dinosaur species. Among these remarkable finds are specimens attributed to renowned dinosaurs like Iguanodon, Megalosaurus, Baryonyx, Polacanthus, and even one resembling the infamous Velociraptor, indicated by the discovery of a similar tooth. These discoveries hold immense value in understanding prehistoric life and evolution. Notably, a number of these fascinating fossils are on display at the Bexhill Museum, providing an invaluable opportunity for the public to engage with and appreciate the ancient wonders of the Earth.
