A cafeteria worker’s good deed was rewarded by the school’s vendor in the worst way you can think of: by firing her from her job.

On March 28, Bonnie Kimball, who worked for Fresh Picks, a catering concessionaire that sold food at the Mascoma Valley Regional Highschool in Manchester, New Hampshire, decided to give a student a free pass during lunch, serving the kid food even if the student had no money to pay. She reminded the kid to “tell (your) mom you need money,” and gave him lunch just like she did the others.

The story of Kimball’s firing has since gone viral, making the rounds on the web as many netizens were shocked after finding out how her employer handled the situation. When asked by The Associated Press, the cafeteria attendant explained:

“His family is very well-known in this town and I can guarantee that if I called his mother, she would have come right in and paid the bill.” She adds: “But I didn’t want to get her out of work. I know they would have brought the money the next day. The bill was going to get paid.”

Fresh Picks has reached out to a local television network, offering to rehire Kimball and pay her back wages, saying that it would “work with the school district to revise policies and procedures regarding transactions.” The embattled former employee told the network that she hasn’t received any offers from Fresh Picks to get her job back and revealed that she was not interested in returning to work.

The school district also released a statement regarding the matter, saying that any student unable to pay for lunch would be provided with food, milk, vegetables, and fruit.

As word spread throughout the internet, celebrity chef José Andrés, known for his outreach programs that aim to feed the hungry in disaster-struck areas, has offered to give Kimball a job at his organization, World Central Kitchen.

He tweeted: “the hero is Bonnie Kimball. If she needs a new job, we have openings @thinkfoodgroup.”

Kimball has not replied (since Andrés’ Twitter post), whether or not she has thought about the offer or has applied for any job within the superstar chef’s nonprofit organization, but a lot of opportunities are available for the kind-hearted former cafeteria worker, now that word of her good deed has spread.
