A new pair of shoes might seem like an ordinary treasure to most people, but for sophomore J.R. Gilbert, no gift could have been better of more needed.

During class at Somerset High School in Somerset, Washington, the special needs student reportedly told other classmates that his only pair of shoes were three sizes too small. Despite having size 13 feet, he had been wearing size 10 shoes because they were his grandfathers and, in effect, were special.

Once this fact was made known, the studies rallied together and held a school-wide donation drive to buy Gilbert some new kicks.

Shortly before Christmas, a hoard of teenagers gathered together and presented a wrapped box containing two pairs of brand new Nike sneakers. The students’ excitement is palpable, and J.R.’s gratitude is enough to make any Scrooge misty-eyed.
