Food poisoning infections on the other hand, can be transmitted in several ways, but never through direct contact with an infected person. The most common cause of food poisoning is cross-contamination during which bacteria transfer from one surface to another. Cross-contamination can happen in many different ways, including improper hand-washing by food handlers after using the toilet and using un-sanitized kitchen equipment such as chopping boards.

Another cause of food poisoning is food spoilage, which happens when food items aren’t kept at the right temperature. When food items aren’t kept cold enough (below 40°F or 5°C), or hot enough (above 140°F or 63°C), harmful bacteria begin to grow rapidly, producing toxins that cause gut inflammation when eaten.
