Rockstar legend and lead singer of Aerosmith, Steven Tyler has been changing people’s lives with his music for years, and now he may be making a bigger impact on the future of these girls that have nobody else to turn to.
Tyler has been building homes for girls from the ages of 12 to 18 who have been abused. These centers are refugees for those that are running away from violence.They also provide resources and programs for the abuse survivors. Thanks to Tyler’s foundation called Janie’s Fund, which donated $500,000 to the facility, this dream was made possible.
The second facility that has been opened is called Janie’s House, which is located in Memphis, Tennessee. It’s named after Aerosmith’s hit song “Janie’s Got a Gun,” which is about a girl who was being raped by her father, and to get away from her own reality, she starts taking drugs.
Janie’s house is located in the 82-acre property of a nonprofit organisation called Youth Villages and can house up to 14 girls at a time, while providing services for up to 30 girls every year. During the ‘scarf cutting ceremony’ at the opening of the home, Tyler cut the scarf and said,
“This does my heart and my soul good. This is real – to help even just one girl through Janie’s House is a dream come true… just when the world feels over, you can turn into a butterfly.”
The girls who were also living in Janie’s House were present at the event, and one of the them who is now 14 years old said that being in the facility has thoroughly changed her life. “The reason that I am at Janie’s House is because I experienced sexual abuse at the age of 3. Through Janie’s House, I can learn a lot about my past and learn I was not the only one that had been through the same problems”
Tyler thought of opening these facilities when he got inspiration from spending sometime in rehab for alcohol abuse.
“While I was there, all the girls I met had been abused either physically, mentally, or verbally, or at least 90 percent of them all,” Tyler said. “So when I got out of there, I laid it all on Janie. I said, what are you going to do?”
The first of Janie’s House opened in 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia, and the third will be opened in Las Vegas at the latter part of this year.
