Starving Child Deemed To Be A Witch Recently Had His First Day Of School!

Approximately a year ago, a starving child on the brink of death was rescued by a Danish aid worker in Nigeria. As True Activist reported in January of 2016, the community refused to feed or assist the toddler because they believed he was a witch.

Anja Ringgren Lovén broke the society’s rules when she refused to let the frail child go a minute longer without food, love, or a safe place to live. The iconic photo paired with the story shows Lovén tipping a water bottle into the mouth of the boy, who was later named Hope.

Eight months after Hope found refuge and the support he needed, he looked like a completely different child. Now, it’s been approximately a year since Lovén with the organization DINNødhjælp (‘your relief’) rescued the boy, and we’re proud to relay that he recently attended his first day of school!

The activist shared the positive update on social media, where it was quickly nabbed by alternative media sites and re-shared the inform the masses. One of DINNødhjælp’s main objectives is to provide sanctuary for the children who are cast out of their family’s homes due to the belief that they might be witches. As Bored Panda notes, some religious leaders in Nigeria are quick to make the accusation, as supposed exorcism services are costly to those who are affected – obviously in more ways than one.  Fortunately, Hope now lives a happy life with a new family, and one year on, has a fresh start to life!

There will be many, many more happy achievements for Hope and his new family to celebrate in the future.
