Self Driving Car Takes Trip From San Francisco To New York

Driver_free_carThis week, an autonomous car built by Delphi Corp. finished a cross-country trip from San Francisco to New York. The car drove itself for 99% of the journey, and obeyed all traffic laws, including the speed limit.

“We expected we would be in autonomous mode most of the time, but to be in it close to 99 percent of the time was a pleasant surprise. The equipment was flawless,” Jeff Owens, Delphi’s chief technology officer told the Associated Press.

The test run was used to test the capabilities of self driving cars, and collect data that will be used to further develop the technology.

“This technology has come so far. It’s going to make such a difference in the accident statistics,” Owens said.

In total, the car traveled 15 states and 3,400 miles.
