The drill will take place over the next three days and will focus on emergency response and civilian protection in the event of a nuclear, chemical, or biological disaster, while the US National Security agencies mull the use of military force against Assad's government.
Following the collapse of diplomatic cooperation in Syria and a dramatic spike in the tensions between the US and Russia, Russia has begun a massive, nationwide civil defense drill that will take place over the next three days. The goal of the drill is to test the disaster readiness of communications between the local and federal government, as well as rehearse emergencies pertaining to radiation, chemical, and biological protection of key personnel and the general population.
According to Russia’s Emergency Minister, Vladimir Puchkov:
“[Russia’s] priority during the drill is to train evacuation of the civilian population from potentially-risky areas. The main goal of the drill is to practice organization of management during civil defense events and emergency and fire management, to check preparedness of management bodies and forces of civil defense on all levels to respond to natural and man-made disasters and to take civil defense measures.”
Other practices that will be rehearsed over between now and October 7th also include fire safety, civil defense, and civilian protection at major social institutions and public buildings. Response units will also practice deploying radiation, chemical, and biological monitoring centers, as well as sanitation posts, in key areas. Much of the drill will be focused on the “civil defense team”, which responds to large disasters and fires of both natural and man-made origin, according to Russia’s Ministry of Civil Defense, Emergencies, and Natural Disaster Management. An astounding 40 million people will be involved in the drill over the next few days, nearly 30 percent of Russia’s total population. This number includes 200,000 emergency response specialists who plan to use 50,000 units of equipment over the course of the drill.
This follows the largest escalation of the five-year-long Syrian “civil war,” which is more accurately described as a US-Russia proxy war. Earlier this week, diplomatic cooperation between the two nations officially collapsed over the US’ refusal to stop actively supporting Al-Nusra Front, an Al-Qaeda offshoot that has pledged allegiance to ISIS. The US refusal to abandon Al-Nusra follows the collapse of a recent ceasefire deal that the US, Israel, and Al-Nusra violated over 300 times. As True Activist reported this past weekend, the US has been “pursuing alternatives”, including air strikes against Assad. More specifically the State Department, the CIA, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff have discussed limited military strikes against the Syrian regime, as a way of “forcing Syrian dictator Bashar Al-Assad to pay the cost for his violations of the ceasefire, disrupt his ability to continue committing war crimes against civilians in Aleppo, and raise the pressure on the regime to come back to the negotiating table in a serious way.”
Their alleged plan in order to avoid involving the UN Security Council or the White House, which has been reluctant to engage Assad militarily, is to allegedly carry out the attack covertly and without public knowledge. The CIA and the Joint Chiefs of Staff expressed support for such “kinetic” options, according to the Washington Post. This clearly shows that the US is on a collision course for disaster as air strikes against Assad, as well as attempts to take control over Syrian airspace would force the US to declare war on Syria as well as Russia, which could then involve China and Iran due to regional defense pacts. Even military leaders, such as General Joseph Dunford, have spoken against the hawkish statements. Despite this, it is currently being promoted by Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter. However, the people of the US, at least those who oppose the onset of a still avoidable world war, must demand an end to this reckless, hawkish behavior that endangers us all.
